Background

Dr. Sick-Samuels grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. She completed her undergraduate degree in Microbiology at the University of Maryland College Park, attended medical school at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, during which time she also obtained a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She completed pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. After completion of fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, she joined the faculty of the division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Dr. Sick-Samuels is also an Associate Hospital Epidemiologist in the Department of Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control at the Johns Hopkins Hospital

The focus of Dr. Sick-Samuel’s research is to describe the epidemiology of and to develop effective strategies preventing multidrug-resistant infections in children, particularly healthcare-associated infections. She is investigating how diagnostic stewardship may optimize the use of microbiology testing and associated antibiotic prescribing in hospitalized children. Her other interests include patient safety and quality improvement, and response to emerging or re-emerging infectious such as Zika virus, Measles and respiratory viruses like SARS-COV-2.
