Visiting Medical Student Information

Thank you for your interest in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Visiting Medical Student Program.

Applications are accepted from visiting medical students up to six months prior to the scheduled elective start date, and must be submitted at least six weeks prior to the start date of the elective.

The following types of electives are offered by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) to visiting medical students:

  1. Clinical Electives: A limited number of clinical electives are available to final year medical students who are attending either LCME or COCA accredited schools, or schools with which Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has a formal affiliation. If you are uncertain if your school has a formal affiliation with JHUSOM, check with a school official before submitting your application.
  2. Research Electives: Research experiences are offered on a space available basis to U.S. and international trained medical students who submit appropriate application materials to the Office of the Registrar.
  3. Virtual Electives: Virtual electives occur entirely via remote instructional modalities, either synchronously or asynchronously, depending upon the course. Virtual electives will not require students to be physically present in order to participate. Visiting medical students registered for virtual electives are not permitted to enter School of Medicine research or clinical facilities.

Questions that are not answered on this website should be directed to our visiting student coordinator at [email protected].
